SPF — Sun Protection Factor — is a measure of how well a sunscreen filters UVB radiation, the portion of the ultraviolet spectrum most responsible for sunburn. SPF Numbers Are Not Linear

PA stands for Protection Grade of UVA and uses a plus-sign system (PA+ through PA++++) tied to a measured UVA protection factor. PA++++ indicates a UVA protection factor of 16 or greater — the strongest tier in the system. You may see both Broad Spectrum and a PA rating on the same product; they communicate related but distinct information.
SPF (Sun Protection Factor)
A standardized measure of how well a sunscreen blocks UVB rays — the type primarily responsible for sunburn. It indicates how much longer protected skin can be exposed to UVB compared to unprotected skin.
UVA rays
Longer-wavelength ultraviolet rays that penetrate deeply into the skin. UVA rays are associated with premature aging and can contribute to skin cancer risk even when no burn occurs.
UVB rays

Armed with these definitions, reading a sunscreen label becomes straightforward. Here's a quick decision framework:
- SPF 30 minimum for daily use; SPF 50 or higher if you're spending extended time outdoors, at altitude, or on water and sand where UV reflection is higher.
- "Broad Spectrum" is non-negotiable if you want UVA coverage under U.S. regulatory standards. SPF alone tells you nothing about UVA.
- PA++++ (or at least PA+++) on imported formulas signals strong UVA protection; PA+ or PA++ offers only modest UVA defense.
- Water resistance ratings (40 or 80 minutes) indicate how long protection holds during swimming or heavy sweating — reapplication is still required afterward.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends reapplying every two hours when outdoors, regardless of SPF. A high SPF number does not extend your reapplication window.
